Benno Penner

The Central British Fund (CBF) put together a large team of people to look after the Boys.

The Boys were teenage and child-Holocaust survivors, who were brought to the UK after the war for rest and rehabilitation.

The British government offered 1,000 visas to bring the Boys to the UK but the caveat was that the CBF were responsible for their care and would pay all the expenses.

Penner was born in Dresden in Germany in 1927.

He worked in Glasgow and later at the hostels in Liverpool and Singleton Road in Manchester. One of the Boys, Mayer Hersch, remembered “the love and devotion of the staff” including Penner at the hostel in Manchester.

He married Ruth Spier, who also worked with the Boys, and together they emigrated to Israel. He later changed his name to Yissachar be Yaacov.

Penner died in 1997.
