Szombathely, Hungary

Members of the Boys were born in Szombathely in Hungary.

The Boys were teenage and child-Holocaust survivors, who were brought to the UK after the war for rest and rehabilitation.

Members of the Boys were held in Nazi labour and concentration camps and used as slave labourers. They had also survived World War II in hiding or as lone children.

Szombathely is the administrative centre of Vas County in the west of the country, located near the border with Austria.

In 1941, about 3,400 Jews lived in Szombathely, amounting to nearly 10% of the population. Jews were inducted into forced labour battalions in 1942. In May 1944, Jews were concentrated in the local ghettos. A few months later they were deported to Auschwitz II-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp.

About 50 Jews survived and returned after the Holocaust.

What to see

Former Synagogue (Bartók Concert Hall) Built between 1880 and 1881, the stunning, large temple was designed by Ludwig Schöne with Oriental and Romantic elements. It served as the center of religious life until the community was destroyed in 1944. Since 1975, it has been transformed into a concert hall, preserving the structure, located near the city center.
Ghetto Location The ghetto centred around Thököly and Rákóczi Ferenc II Streets. This area included the main synagogues and over 700 apartments, confining the Jewish population before deportation.
